Tamil Nadu
I had been to the old bus stand at Tiruchendur on 19.05.2008. Hundreds of passengers were waiting to return to their destinations after worship at the Subramaniya Swamy Temple. On sighting the arrival of a bus, the passengers, including ladies with their children and the luggage on their head were running towards it to board, pushing one another. Some are seen practically jumping into the bus. In the melee some of them fell down but somehow escaped unhurt. There were none to regulate the passengers. I request the authorities concerned to help passengers form queues by erecting temporary route indicators. K.K. Krishnamurthy, Tiruchendur. Let Nagercoil-Mumbai Express run dailyThe Nagercoil-Mumbai Express is the only direct train (No.6340) connecting the south with Mumbai and passing through many cities in Tamil Nadu and Bangalore and other places in Karnataka. The aged and ladies find it convenient to travel alone in this train to Mumbai without any change of train. The train is operated four days a week. The increasing demand for the seats in the train has not alerted the authorities to make additional provisions. The reservation is completed well in advance and the tatkal scheme too is ineffective. The counters are opened at 8 a.m. for issue of tickets in Tuticorin. The people are queuing up, before the counters from 6 a.m. and are told at 8.15 a.m. about the non-availability of tickets even in tatkal. Will the train be operated daily?. N. Kasilingam, Tuticorin. Train service needs improvementThough Railway Minister Laloo Prasad has been taking lots of efforts to increase the convenience of railway passengers, there is still a long way to go. The computerised printing of railway tickets is a bane and not a boon. The arrival and departure time is not clearly printed on tickets. There is overwriting of berth and coach numbers. The railway chart showing the list of passengers is not pasted on time. There is a delay in sticking the charts. Announcements of arrival and departure time are not audible enough. Escalators though available are not functioning most of the time. In AC coaches, the air is not properly conditioned. Bedsheets and pillows are not good. Besides, cockroaches and rats have become a great menace nowadays. Train travel which was earlier considered comfortable has now become a great nuisance. Hope the authorities concerned will take necessary action to rectify the defects. S. Thilagalakshmi, Tirunelveli.
