KASARAGOD: The Akhila Kerala Dheevara Sabha has demanded that the Union government include fishermen communities in the country in the list of Scheduled Castes (SC) or Scheduled Tribes (ST). At a press conference here, dheevara sabha general secretary V. Dinakaran said that the Union government which was showing haste to provide benefits due to SCs and STs to Dalit Christians and Dalit Muslims should first confer those benefits to fishermen communities. He appealed to the State government to write off the debts of fishermen in a manner similar to the steps taken by the union government. The government should make the benefits as per the fishermen debt relief Act passed by the State legislature available to fishermen, he said.
