Property tax exemptions for rural areas

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi has finalised the exemptions for property tax payers in the Capital’s village areas and rebates for providing parking space in residential properties.

At a meeting of the House on Monday, Leader of the House Subhash Arya said amendments would ensure that from now on -- in rural areas and urban villages -- one self-occupied residential property will be free from property tax.

Legal heirs

“The old farmers and their legal heirs will also be exempted from payment of property tax in this category. For residential properties, construction of a basement for parking purposes would lead to 75 per cent exemption in property tax for the same basement on car parking area,” he added.

The meeting also witnessed discussions on the ongoing survey of dangerous old buildings in Delhi with most members demanding a status report from the Municipal Commissioner.

The meeting of the House was, however, disrupted soon after with the Congress members staging loud protests against the Bharatiya Janata Party’s “bungling” of the Gujjar situation in Rajasthan.

Loud sloganeering under the guidance of Leader of the Opposition J. K. Sharma eventually led Mayor Arti Mehra to adjourn the House.
