Hike in conversion charges sought

Staff Reporter

TIRUPUR: As the three-year agreement on conversion charges for weavers expired, the weavers’ organisations in Somanur, Palladam and Avanashi region have appealed to the textile manufacturers, who supply yarn to them, to give a 100 per cent hike in conversion charges.

The Coimbatore District Weavers’ Joint Committee, an umbrella organisation for nearly 2 lakh weavers in the district, made this appeal in the wake of rising prices of essentials.

Somanur weavers’ association president Velusamy said the weavers wanted a 100 per cent hike from the existing rates fixed in 2005 mainly because the wages had gone up significantly in the last couple of years. The frequent power cuts forced the industry to use generators which led to increase in production costs.

They also asked the textile manufacturers to bear 50 per cent cost of transportation of yarn and grey cloth.
