Unaccounted explosive material seized

KARUR: Even as the police continued their probe into the theft of more than 17,100 detonators from the godown of an explosive dealer here recently, an intensive search of the establishments of the complainant’s customers has resulted in the seizure of a huge quantity of explosive materials kept illegally and unaccounted.

Explosives dealer Murugesan, of Rayanur, had complained that the detonators had gone missing from his godown near Punnam Chatram.

Suspecting that there might have been some unaccounted explosive material in the possession of the complainant and some of his customers and other dealers, the police launched a district-wide search.

Police teams

Police teams, including personnel of the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad and sniffer dogs, scanned the premises of the blue metal supplier, who happened to be a customer of the complainant, and unearthed 392 electronic detonators, 871 ordinary detonators and one coil of safety fuse measuring 349 metres.

A similar search of the premises close to the godown of the complainant yielded 800 kg of gelatin, safety fuse measuring 4,600 metres, 25 kg Ammonium Nitrate and 5,000 ordinary detonators.

Superintendent of Police K. Shanmugavel confirmed the seizure of the explosive materials. The stock position of other clients of the complainant was being verified.

Special police teams intensified their interrogation of suspects in the theft of 17,100 detonators. The investigators see red in several issues raised by the complainant.
