BJP victory

This refers to the article “Karnataka: the BJP victory in perspective” (June 2). The argument that if the Congress and the Janata Dal (Secular) come together, they can, given their vote shares, push the BJP to a distant second in the next Lok Sabha election is unacceptable. It is possible that the voters, wary of unstable coalitions, will choose the BJP in the hope of voting for stability.

Prasanna Kannan,

Essex

The people of Karnataka have given the BJP its much-deserved charge of the State. The politics of the JD (S) cost the nation heavily, as it necessitated an unnecessary election.

For the BJP, the verdict should serve as a stepping stone to success in the south. It has worked for the victory and richly deserves it.

Pandithar Sivakumar Perumal,

Pune

That the BJP could secure a near-majority with just 33.86 per cent vote share points to the reality that almost all Legislative Assemblies and even Parliament present only a distorted version of the people’s preferences.

Nirmala Asokan,

Cuddalore
