Corrections and clarifications

  • The first paragraph in a report “Burney episode regrettable, he is always welcome: New Delhi” (June 1, 2008, page 1) was “New Delhi on Saturday said that denying entry to Pakistani Minister Ansar Burney to India was regrettable and he was always welcome to visit the country”, while another report “Burney regrets ‘half-apology’ by Indian government” (June 1, 2008), in the third paragraph, stated that Ansar Burney “the well-known human rights activist, who was instrumental in getting President Pervez Musharraf to pardon Kashmir Singh, an Indian who had spent 30 years on death row in a Pakistani jail — he was at that time a Minister in the 2007-2008 caretaker government — said he was unable to understand what documents he did not have.” Mr. Burney was a minister in the caretaker government that took office in November 2007 to see the country through the elections. He is no longer a minister.

  • The third paragraph in a report “Monsoon comes calling” (June 1, 2008) was “There was persistent convention or cloud cover over the Arabian Sea and peninsular India with fairly widespread rainfall — isolated heavy to very heavy falls for the past two days over Kerala.” It should have been convection.

  • The second paragraph in a Chennai report “Order to provide reservation for minority communities” (Tamil Nadu, May 31, 2008) was “The government had promulgated an ordinance in September 15, 2008, to provide reservation for Muslims and Christians.” It should have been on September 15, 2007.

  • The third paragraph in an article “The rise of Asia & West’s petulant response” (Editorial page, May 30, 2008) was “Mr. Fukuyama, who has since abandoned neo-conservatism and recanted some of his theories, was in such a hurry to hail the supremacy of the western system that either he was not able to see or chose to ignore. The early signs of a new battleground taking shape in Asia with India and China finally waking up from their slumber to stake their claim as the new kids on the block.” It was wrong editing. The two should have been one sentence.

  • In a report “BJP meet to draw road map for election year” (May 30, 2008), the fourth paragraph was “Rajasthan is under siege by Gujjars, who are demanding that the BJP government fulfil the election promise that they would be given Scheduled Caste status ....” It should have been Scheduled Tribe status. A similar mistake appeared in a cartoon on May 30, 2008 and was corrected in this column.
