A NEW CLASS: R. Ravichandran, Director-Sales, Intel South Asia, with the low cost Net book at a press conference in Chennai on Monday. CHENNAI: The Intel Atom processor is the name for a new family of low-power processors designed specifically for mobile Internet devices (MID) and a new class of simple and affordable Internet-centric computers to be launched soon. Addressing a press conference here on Monday, R. Ravichandran, Director (Sales) Intel South Asia, said the Intel processor was based on an entirely new micro-architecture designed specifically for small devices and low power, while maintaining the Intel Core 2 Duo instruction set compatibility consumers were accustomed to when using a standard PC and the Internet. Mr. Ravichandran said the design also included support for multiple threads for better performance and increased system responsive- ness. All of this on a chip that measured less than 25 mm sq, making it Intel’s smallest and lowest power processor, he added. Shift in designHe said Intel Atom was the smallest processor yet, built with the world’s smallest transistors. It was the result of a fundamentally new shift in design, small yet powerful enough to enable a big Internet experience on these new devices. Intel also believed in providing low-cost Internet-centric mobile computing devices dubbed ‘net books’ and basic Internet-centric desktop PCs dubbed ‘net top’, he said.
