Exports up 31% in April

NEW DELHI: Exports in April 2008-09 registered an impressive growth of 31 per cent, though oil imports also went up by a steep 46.2 per cent for the same month.
According to the latest data for April, released by the Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry here on Monday, exports were valued at $14.4 billion (Rs. 57,633 crore), up 31.5 per cent in dollar terms and 24.8 per cent in rupee terms against $10.95 billion (Rs. 46,164 crore) in April 2007-08. On the other hand, imports were valued at $24.27 billion (Rs. 97,151 crore), an increase of 36.6 per cent in dollar terms and 29.7 per cent in rupee terms against $17.76 billion (Rs. 74,895 crore). Oil imports were valued 46.2 per cent higher at $8 billion (5.4 billion).. Non-oil imports were estimated at $16.24 billion ($12.27 billion), a growth of 32.3 per cent . The worrying factor for the Government would be the increasing trade deficit that went up to $9.87 billion from $6.8 billion
