Hans Lata Maheswari NEW DELHI: A 78-year-old woman was found bludgeoned to death in the Capital’s upmarket Greater Kailash-II area on Sunday night when her family returned home after watching the final of the Indian Premier League cricket championship at a nearby club in Alaknanda. Hans Lata Maheswari was found lying in a pool of blood in the bathroom of her multi-storey residence when her son Sudhir Maheswari returned from Jahanpanaah Club along with his wife and young daughter around 10-30 p.m. The family found the entry gate and front door of the house wide open and the cupboards and rooms on the ground and first floor ransacked. After looking around for some time, Sudhir discovered the body of his mother in the bathroom, her hands tied up with a piece of cloth. Ms. Maheswari lived on the ground floor, while the other members of the family stayed on the first floor. The family has two part-time domestic helps and had hired a driver a few months ago. Though none of the two helps came on Sunday, the driver also did not report for duty. “Since the family found the front door open and the house ransacked, it appears to be a case of robbery. The robbery was executed within a span of an hour when the family was away at the club,” a senior police officer said on Monday. “The door that opens into the back lane was also found open, suggesting that the robbers escaped from there. As the curtains of the house were drawn, no one noticed anything from outside. Though robbery seems to be the motive as of now, we are also probing the property angle,” the officer added. The family had last spoken to Ms. Maheswari on phone from the club around 8-30 p.m. Ms. Maheswari’s elder son Vijay resides in M Block of Greater Kailash and both the brothers own dry-fruit shops in Khari Baoli. Describing his mother as a “spirited woman”, Sudhir said: “Even at 78, she never felt the need for a full-time domestic help and could take care of herself. My elder brother’s family stays close to our house and they often visit us. We have no enemies and it seems to be the handiwork of an organised gang that kept an eye on our movements.”
