Four militants killed in encounter in Jammu and Kashmir

Srinagar: Four Lashkar-e-Taiba militants were killed in separate encounters with security forces in Jammu and Kashmir’s Baramulla and Kupwara districts, official sources said on Monday.

Self-styled commander of LeT UsmaN Bhai and his associate Abu Jibran were killed in a gunbattle with security forces at Chuntipora village in Handwara area of Kupwara district, the sources said. They said the slain militants were believed to be Pakistan nationals.

In a separate operation, a gunbattle broke out between LeT militants and security forces at Watergam village in Rafiabad area of Baramulla district at 8.15 a.m., the sources said.

Two militants, believed to be foreigners, were killed in the encounter, the sources said, adding search operations were on at both places.

A defence spokesman said two suspected militants were arrested during a joint operation by troops of the 29 Rashtriya Rifles and police at Pattan in Baramulla district on Monday.

The arrested militants were identified as Mohammad Shameem Sada and Khaleel Mohd Mir. A 7.62 mm pistol, 10 rounds of ammunition and 10 grenades were recovered from their possession. In another operation, a local militant of the LeT, Younis Ahmad Mir, was arrested from Shamaswari in interior Srinagar. Mir, a resident of Bemina locality, was arrested by police during checking and a grenade and 50 bullets were recovered from him. Two suspected militants — Mohammad Shameem Sada and Khaleel Mohammad Mir — were arrested from the Pattan area of Baramulla and a pistol, one magazine, 10 bullets and 10 grenades recovered. — PTI
