BIAL to make toilet more ‘disabled friendly’

Staff Reporter

The BIAL said the door handle would be brought to 800 mm from finished floor level

Bangalore: The Bengaluru International Airport Ltd (BIAL) on Monday said it would replace the round-shaped, “disabled-unfriendly” doorknob of the toilet for persons with disabilities at the arrival lounge of the airport.

Responding to a complaint by C. Mahesh published in The Hindu on May 31, the BIAL has said that the height of the door handle would be brought to 800 mm from finished floor level to comply with the National Building Code. However, regarding complaint about “disabled-unfriendly” grab bars, the BIAL clarified that they have been fixed as stipulated in the code. Also, the height of the water closet and the grab bar running at the front of the wash basin in the toilet were designed as per the code, the BIAL said. The BIAL said it had provided disabled-friendly infrastructure at all areas, including parking bay, terminal building, and entrance of terminal building.
