Thiruvananthapuram: The Chamber of Commerce, Trivandrum, has welcomed the High Court order directing the government to return the Golf Club to the management. A pressnote quoting the president of the chamber M. Sangeethkumar said the government had shown undue haste in taking over the club. Any move to persist with the takeover would deprive the capital of a heritage institution and render 100 employees jobless, he said. CPI(M) district secretary Kadakampally Surendran urged the government to appeal against the High Court verdict. He called for steps to prevent the prime land from being alienated. Mr. Surendran said the Cabinet had decided to take over the club after the management failed to furnish documents to substantiate their claims. He said the management had done little to promote golfing. “The club earns a handsome amount every month by letting out the premises for cinema and serial shooting, marriages, cultural programmes and other functions. Yet, it is reluctant to remit the lease amount due to the government.” Mr. Surendran said the claim to ownership by the club management was a challenge to the government. Terming the verdict as ‘`disappointing’, AIYF State president V.S. Sunilkumar demanded action against the officials who had tried to torpedo the government decision. He urged the government to go in appeal against the order.
