BHUBANESWAR: The State Committee of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Monday demanded that the public distribution system to be universalised soon to help people cope with the rising prices of essential commodities. At a press conference here, secretary of the party’s State Committee Janardan Pati said the government should also stop future trading of various essential items and ensure payment of minimum support price for the farmers. Mr. Pati also strongly criticised the Central government for its proposal to increase the petroleum prices. If prices of petroleum products were raised it would have a disastrous effect on the common man, Mr. Pati said. He further said that when the government had failed to control prices of essential commodities, any hike in the process of petroleum products would hamper the interests of the people at large. The Central government should immediately decrease import duty on import of crude oil to prevent a rise in prices of petroleum products, Mr. Pati added. The CPI (M) along with like-minded parties would organise a nationwide agitation if the Central government went ahead with hiking the prices of petroleum products in the coming days, he said.
