Fast track training for new police recruits

Staff Reporter

BHUBANESWAR: Faced with acute manpower crunch, the State police has decided to reduce the basic training period for sub- inspectors from one year to six months in order to expedite their joining to the force.

Addressing the first batch of cadets of sub-inspectors at Biju Patnaik State Police Academy (BPSPA) here on Monday, Director General of Police Gopal Chandra Nanda said the low strength of personnel at police station level had been felt for quite some time. As many as 236 cadets, the biggest ever recruitment for the post of SI, joined the police training at BPSPA. Earlier, police training facility was provided at Angul.

“We need these personnel to graduate from the academy as earlier as possible. Their basic training period has been condensed to six months. We will also spare these cadets from being deployed during festivals in order to help complete the courses,” Mr.Nanda said.

The DGP, however, made it clear that reduction of training time was applicable to this batch only.

He said a year ago there were around 12,000 vacancies in different cadres while it had come down to 9,000. Of these, 900 posts of SIs were alone lying vacant, the police DG said.

Elaborating on the basic training, Director of BPSPA, B. Radhika said there would be no compromise on basic training to police personnel. Additional DGP Prakash Mishra, Additional DGP (planning) A.S Bedi and IGP (prison) V. Thigarajan were present .
