400 tonnes of fertilizers procured

Staff Correspondent

200 tonnes to be allotted to Harpanahalli taluk

Jagalur, Honnali taluks to get 100 tonnes each

DAVANGERE: Following protest by farmers against inadequate supply of fertilizers here, Deputy Commissioner of Davangere district M.B. Dyaberi procured 400 tonnes of fertilizers from Shimoga district on Monday evening.

Speaking to The Hindu, Mr. Dyaberi said that 200 tonnes of fertilizers would be allotted to Harpanahalli taluk and 100 tonnes each to Jagalur and Honnali taluks, where sowing is expected to take place soon. The distribution of fertilizers and seeds would hereafter be continuously monitored, he said.

Davangere MP Siddeshwar blamed the United Progressive Alliance Government for the scarcity of fertilizers and seeds.

He alleged that the Union Government had failed to protect the interests of the farmers. Shortage of fertilizers and seeds was a nationwide phenomenon, he said.

“Had the Union Government been sincere in its efforts, and supplied the required quality of fertilizers and seeds, today’s incident would not have happened,” he said.

Mr. Siddeshwar said he had spoken to Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa over telephone, and added that the latter was planning to hold a meeting of agricultural officers in Bangalore on Tuesday.“He may re-introduce the scheme of providing 75 per cent subsidy on fertilizers to small and marginal farmers,” he said.

Minister S.A. Ravindranath said that the Union Government was supposed to pay Rs. 5,800 crore to fertilizer companies towards subsidy, for the last two years, and it had not been done.

“The fertilizer companies are therefore reluctant to manufacture fertilizers,” he said.Mr. Ravindranath said that the Union Government had failed to import phosphoric acid that was required for the manufacture of fertilizers.
