Those with hearing disorders can lead a normal life

VISAKHAPATNAM: A team of doctors performed cochlear implant surgery on a two-and-a-half-year-old girl in a city hospital. This was the first cochlear implant surgery performed in Visakhapatnam, said ENT surgeons T. Krishna Kishore and T. Sai Balarama Krishna at a press conference held at the NRI Hospital on Monday.

Noted cochlear implant surgeon from Mumbai M.V. Kirtane led the team of doctors in the two-and-a-half-hour surgery performed on Sunday morning on Poojasri, whose father is working in the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant. The surgery was shown live on closed circuit television and was watched by about 50 ENT surgeons of north coastal Andhra. Anaesthetists Srinivas Varma and Soma Raju assisted the surgeons.

Cochlear implant is a boon to the deaf and dumb persons as it would help them hear and talk and lead a normal life like others.

The implant worth Rs. 5 lakhs was used in the case of Poojasri. Several tests like MRI, CT scan, advanced audiometry were conducted on the patient before the implantation was done, while paediatrician’s opinion was also obtained. Speech therapy for about a period of one year would be followed after surgery.
