LJP to go it alone in J&K

LJP president Ram Vilas Paswan releases the first list of candidates in Srinagar

Party promises to provide a job to one member of each family if voted to power

SRINAGAR: Releasing the first list of candidates for the upcoming Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections, Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) president Ram Vilas Paswan on Monday said his party would contest the polls on its own in all constituencies across the State.

“We will contest the elections due in October on our own. We have no inclination to enter into alliance with any party,” Mr. Paswan told reporters after addressing a party rally at Sher-e-Kashmir Park here. On the number of candidates the party would field, the Union Chemicals and Fertilisers Minister said, “We will contest all the seats.” Releasing the first list of eight party hopefuls, he said LJP vice-president Sanjay Saraf would contest the election from Habba Kadal.

Mr. Paswan said his party would provide a job to one member of each family if it was voted to power in the October election.

As part of the poll preparations, the LJP would hold rallies in Anantnag, Kokernag and Bandipora in the next two days, Mr. Paswan said.

“No fertiliser shortage”

Mr. Paswan said there was no shortage of fertilisers in J&K and adequate quantities had been made available to the State from time to time.

“There is no shortage of fertilisers in Jammu and Kashmir. We are providing fertilisers according to the projections made by the State Government. In fact, we have provided more than requisitioned from time to time,” asserted the Union Minister.

There have been reports of shortage of fertilisers in many areas of the State as the farming season begins.

Meanwhile, CPI (M) State secretary M.Y. Tarigami asked the Congress-led coalition government to provide adequate quantity of fertilisers to the farmers in the State.

Grave situation

A grave situation has arisen as a result of non-availability of fertilisers to the farmers in the Valley, he said. Despite repeated assurances made to the farmers, the State administration was not visible, Mr. Tarigami said in a statement here.

The non-availability of fertilisers would affect the crops during the current year if urgent measures were not taken to meet the demands of the farmers, he said, asking the Government not to rely on hollow slogans and instead heed the writing on the wall. -- PTI
