NEW DELHI: The Revolutionary Socialist Party on Monday said the Congress-led coalition government at the Centre had not even attempted to reverse the economic policies pursued by the BJP regime. The RSP Central Committee, which held its two-day meeting here, decided that the party would not participate in UPA-Left Coordination Committee meetings. Briefing reporters, general secretary T.J. Chandrachoodan said the party would, however, continue to participate in the UPA-Left joint committee on the India-U.S. civilian nuclear deal and would not allow the government to take the India-specific safeguards agreement to the International Atomic Energy Agency governing board. The Central Committee also decided to hold on August 9 a conclave of Left parties, groups and like-minded intellectuals to discuss the role of the Left parties in the formation of a broader Left Front as a prelude to the creation of a third alternative. On the functioning of the UPA government, Mr. Chandrachoodan said thegovernment and its leaders had not yet realised that the neo-liberal economic prescriptions and free market reforms had played havoc with the lives of the common people. He said inflation and rising prices of essential commodities had broken the backbone of the common people.
