Ivanchuk wins title

New Delhi: Ukraine’s Vassily Ivanchuk dethroned Viswanathan Anand 2.5-1.5 to win the Leon rapid chess title in Leon, Spain on Sunday.

The end to this four-game final was abrupt as Anand blundered in the fourth game and resigned after 16 moves. This was also the first time when Anand, who was looking for his fourth straight title, did not win at this Spanish venue.

Anand lost the first game with white pieces in 40 moves of Sicilian Scheveningen but bounced right back to win the second in Sicilian Najdorf in just 26 moves.

The third game, where Anand played white, was drawn after 56 moves. The sudden end in the fourth game was a result of Anand’s move transposition that led to an immediate loss of material. Anand chose not to continue.
