Farmers yet to get benefit of debt relief

Staff Reporter

KASARAGOD: The Kerala State Farmers’ Debt Relief Commission has passed orders to provide aid to the tune of Rs.16 crore to 7,000 farmers in the State till date.

Speaking to reporters after a sitting of the commission here on Tuesday, commission members N. Chandrasekharan Nair and K.G. Ravi said though the commission had recommended aid nothing had been provided to the debt-ridden farmers. They said the financial institutions would finalise the list of those farmers eligible for the aid under the Centre’s loan waiver scheme by this month end.

The commission could provide aid to those who did not feature in that list, said Mr. Nair. While the Centre’s loan waiver scheme was applicable only to agricultural loans taken by farmers, the commission had powers to recommend waiver of other loans also taken by farmers subject to various conditions, Mr. Ravi said.

The commission members said of the total loans disbursed by cooperative banks in the State, the percentage of agricultural loans was very low.
