Janata Dal(Secular) leader hits out at Congress, BJP

Correspondent

CHIKMAGALUR: Y.S.V. Datta, MLC and spokesperson of the Janata Dal (Secular), has said that people do not want a two-party system in the country.

Speaking to presspersons here on Monday, he pointed out that his party had garnered more than 19 per cent of votes in spite of losing the support of 30 MLAs. This indicated that people had recognised the need for an alternative to the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), he said.

He criticised the Congress and the BJP for depending on orders from their high command.

The setback suffered by the BJP in the recent elections was only a temporary development.

The party had experienced such reversals in the past, he said, and added that he was confident the party would bounce back, he said.

Confident

Mr. Datta, who contested from the Kadur Assembly segment, said that wrong candidates had been selected in several constituencies. Janata Dal (S) president H.D. Deve Gowda had accepted responsibility for poor showing by party candidates.

He had written to all the 42 office-bearers in Chikmagalur district who had resigned following denial of ticket to the former Minister B.B. Ningaiah, urging them to rejoin, Mr. Dutta said.

Expressing confidence that these office-bearers would return to the Janata Dal (Secular) shortly, Mr. Dutta said that a meeting of the party would be held in Bangalore on June 14 and 15.

H.T. Rajendra, president of the district unit of the Janata Dal (S), was present .
