Threat to re-launch stir against SEZs

Special Correspondent

PANAJI: The Goa SEZ Virodhi Manch has threatened to re-launch its agitation if the State Government fails to get three special economic zones (SEZs) de-notified.

Following a letter from the Centre conveying its inability to de-notify three SEZs, the State Government on Monday obtained two weeks time from a Division Bench of the Bombay High Court in Goa to take a decision over the stop-work orders issued to the three private developers of the SEZs concerned. The Government on Tuesday continued its efforts to come out with a suitable solution to the contentious issue. Goa Pradesh Congress Committee president Francisco Sardinha on Tuesday came out with an ambivalent stand on the SEZ issue. Congress Rajya Sabha MP Shantaram Naik said the three SEZs had been de-notified by the people of Goa, and, therefore “bureaucratic order is meaningless and impracticable”.

He was reacting to the refusal by the Centre to de-notify the three SEZs based on State Government’s recommendation.

Mr. Naik said,“ an authority which has power to issue a notification has inherent power to rescind it, and no specific provision is required for the purpose.”
