PUDUCHERRY: Considering the importance of water management and conservation, a number of experts came together to look at an integrated planning approach at a regional scale last month. A consultation meet on “Water Management through Integrated Planning and Regional Collaboration” was organised by the Town and Country Planning department of the Government of Puducherry along with Pondy CAN, INTACH and L’avenir d’. According to a release, there was depletion of groundwater owing to over extraction, salt water intrusion into aquifers, poor ground water recharge from the rains, contamination from open defecation, garbage and industrial waste. The National Water Policy (2002) envisages the water resources of the country should be developed and managed in an integrated manner, the release added. Participating in the meet, Secretary of Ministry of House and Urban Poverty Alleviation Harjit Singh Anand said a regional development plan based on partnership and collaboration would create a win-win situation for Puducherry, Auroville and surrounding areas of Tamil Nadu. Demarcating the regionHe said the first task would be to demarcate the region based on natural resources such as water and topography. Mr. Anand went on to chalk out a strategy on how to set up task forces with the Chief Town Planner and officials of the government of Puducherry and Tamil Nadu, resources persons, INTACH AND Pondy CAN. Accordingly, a component plan on regional planning, water, energy, transportation, health, education and livelihood, heritage, conservation, arts, culture and tourism, demography and economics, environmental management and sustainability have to be prepared.
