The taxpayers would be allowed to claim full tax returns against the excess amount ‘The rebates on offer now include 30 per cent to senior citizens’ NEW DELHI: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi has decided to adjust any excess tax paid by property tax payers during the current financial year against returns to be filed in the next financial year. The taxpayers would be allowed to claim full tax returns against the excess amount. In a statement on Tuesday, Mayor Arti Mehra said: “The House has adopted a resolution giving rebates and exemptions this year to bring the tax position at par with the rates prevailing during 2007-08. Since a number of taxpayers had already paid their tax before we could announce the rollback, this opportunity for adjusting the extra paid amount is being given.” RollbackThe Mayor said the rollback had been made possible only after persistent follow-ups with the Chief Law Officer of the MCD as well as with the Additional Solicitor-General of India. “The rebates on offer now include 30 per cent to senior citizens between 60-65 years of age (up to covered space of 200 square metres), additional rebate of 30 per cent to senior citizens older than 65 years and to women, differently-abled persons. Exemption will be offered to village abadi properties having covered area of 100-200 sq. m,” she added. Ms. Mehra also directed the MCD Assessor and Collector to work out a mechanism for adjustment of the excess tax paid.
