Lightning claims three lives

TUMKUR/CHAMARAJANAGAR: Three persons died when lightning struck them in separate incidents in the State.

A woman died after she was struck by lightning in Nidagal in Pavagada Taluk of Tumkur district on Tuesday evening. The police said Yellakka (30), wife of Ningappa of Nidagal village, was working in the fields when heavy rain started. She took shelter under a tree. A lightening struck her and the tree. She died instantly and the tree was completely burnt. She is survived by husband, a son and a daughter. Around the same time, at Jangamarahalli, Krishnappa (40) died after he was struck by lightening.

The police said Krishnappa, resident of Jangamarahalli, was working in his fields with his wife, Yashodhamma when the incident occurred. He died on the spot, the police said.

The police have registered separate cases and are investigating.

The rain, combined with strong wind, continued to lash the Pavagada taluk into the night.

In the other incident in Chamarajanagar district, Siddesha Shetty (14) was killed on the spot and four other boys were injured when lightning struck them at Doddinduvadi village in Kollegal taluk on Monday. Shetty, a school boy, went to a field along with the four boys to graze sheep.

The injured have been identified as Kempa, Neeli Sidda, Raju and Naveen. All the injured boys were admitted to Kollegal Government Hospital.

Hanur MLA Narendra visited the village and consoled the parents of Siddesha Shetty. The Kollegal Rural Police have registered a case.
