Sheila describes the agreement as a beginning of friendship between two prominent cities

NEW DELHI: The visiting Lord Mayor of Melbourne, John So, and Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit signed the Strategic City Alliance Agreement between the two cities on Tuesday.

With this, the two cities have agreed to formulate a strategic alliance focusing initially on a “Commonwealth Games Host City Partnership” to share experiences in the preparations for and management of multi-disciplinary international sporting events. They would also promote development of sports, exchange of sporting knowledge, business relating to sports and tourism and cultural activities.

Following the signing of the agreement at Delhi Secretariat, Mr. So expressed satisfaction over the pace of preparations for the Commonwealth Games in 2010. The Mayor of Melbourne, who was accompanied among others by the Australian High Commissioner to India, John McCarthy, said that during his visit to Delhi he had visited a number of stadiums and was impressed with the ongoing upgrading of facilities and construction activities.

Ms. Dikshit described the new agreement as a beginning of friendship between two prominent cities. “This is the sixth agreement Delhi has signed with other prominent cities of the world,” she said, and expressed confidence that it would extend the scope for more Indians to go to Melbourne for studies.

The Chief Minister also described Melbourne as a beautifully managed city which was able to meticulously host Commonwealth Games in 2006.

Delhi Chief Secretary Rakesh Mehta made a detailed presentation for the visiting dignitaries on the city infrastructure for the 2010 Commonwealth Games.
