MADURAI: A tribal girl was allegedly gang-raped in front of her family at a remote village near Bodinayakkanur in Theni district in the first week of May. After a human rights organisation took up the issue, police registered a case against three suspects on Saturday and referred the victim for medical examination. In a petition sent to the Chief Secretary, the victim belonging to Senthil Thoppu hamlet in Anaikaraipatti panchayat limits said on May 6 R. Ravi of the same locality barged into the hut at about 11 p.m. and dragged her into a nearby mango groove. A three-member gang that was waiting abused her on caste lines. When the victim’s father, mother and brother tried to intervene, the suspects brandished weapons and threatened to kill them. The family fled the village to a nearby place and lived with a relative there. Even as elders advised her not to antagonise caste Hindus in the area, the victim gathered courage and went to the Bodinayakanur police. DiscouragedA woman police constable who was entrusted with the petition enquiry discouraged her from pursuing the case, she said. “A special team led by a Deputy Superintendent of Police is investigating the case. There is prima facie evidence in support of the woman’s complaint…it seems to be true. Medical examination report is expected in a day or two. We will achieve a breakthrough soon,” Theni Superintendent of Police, R. Sudhakar, told The Hindu on Tuesday. A fact-finding team of Madurai-based human rights organisation, ‘Evidence’, which went to the village of the victim and recorded the statements of the girl, has sought stringent action against the accused. The organisation urged the government to suitably compensate the victim and wanted the National Commission of Women to take suo motu cognisance of the incident and render justice. The police have registered the case under Section 451 (trespass), 342 (wrongful confinement), 354 (criminal force to outrage woman’s modesty), 376 (rape) of IPC and Section 3 (1) (10) (intentionally insulting or intimidating with intent to humiliate a member of Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe in any place within public view) and 3 (2) (5) (any offence under IPC punishable with a term 10 years or more against a member of SC/ST) of the SC and ST Prevention of Atrocities Act, 1989.
