Thiruvananthapuram: A one-day workshop conducted by the Building Materials and Technology Promotion Council (BMTPC) here on Monday came up with recommendations to the government for a draft building bylaw incorporating provisions to protect life and structures from natural hazards. The programme was organised in the context of the revised vulnerability atlas of India, which describes Kerala as a multi-hazard zone prone to earthquake, flood and cyclones. The meeting recommended new building rules and provisions to ensure the quality of concrete structures. The workshop was jointly organised by the Urban Earthquake Vulnerability Reduction Programme (UEVRP), the department of Revenue and the Town Planning Office of the Local Self Government department. J.K.Prasad, chief of BMTPC, Ved Mittal, UNDP consultant , secretary of the State Disaster Management Authority T.T.Antony, Revenue Divisional Officer K. Ramachandran, UEVRP project officer B. Anil and Chief Town Planner Eapen Varghese participated in the discussions.
