Thiruvananthapuram
Thiruvananthapuram: The capital city may soon bid good bye to low voltage problems and frequent and abrupt disruptions in power supply. The Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) has approved a Rs.98-crore project to strengthen the power transmission and distribution network in the city and suburbs. The board last week approved the project that was proposed by a high-level committee headed by Electricity Minister A.K. Balan last year. The project has been designed to service the needs of the rapidly-developing city and the demands posed by the proposed Vizhinjam mother port, the development of the international airport and new power connections. The major component of the project involves the laying of a 14-km-long double circuit 110 kV underground cable linking the sub-stations at Pothencode and Paruthipara and enhancing the capacity of the Paruthipara sub-station. The 66 kV sub-station to Celi will be upgraded to 110 kV. The project also involves linking the Paruthipara, Vattiyoorkavu, Parassala and Vizhinjam sub-stations using a 66 kV line. A KSEB spokesman said the project would ensure uninterrupted power supply by providing three separate sources. While the Paruthipara sub-station will carry power from Edamon, the Pothencode-Paruthipara link will form the second source. The Madurai-Thiruvananthapuram 400 kV line can be also be utilised. The proposal envisages increasing the capacity of the Vizhinjam sub-station to 220 kV to handle the 25 MVA load demand for the proposed container transhipment terminal. The capacity of the Kattakada sub-station will also be increased to 220 kV. Another proposal is for a 220 kV line from Kattakada to Vizhinjam. The construction of a 200 MVA transformer at the Pothencode sub-station has commenced. The master plan proposes enhancing the capacity of the sub-stations at Karamana, Manacaud, Poovar and Kallambalam to 33 kV. The Poovar and Kallambalam stations are expected to be commissioned in two months. The Ambalathara sub-station will also be upgraded to 110 kV.
