Corrections and clarifications
In “Telangana takes a back seat” (Editorial, June 3, 2008), the first paragraph was “The drubbing the Telangana Rashtriya Samithi has taken in the byelections to 18 Assembly and four Parliament seats in Andhra Pradesh speaks volumes about the party’s popular base.” It should have been the Telangana Rashtra Samithi.
The heading of an item (“Snapshots – Business” page, May 30, 2008) was “Videocon plans hydro project in Uttranchal” and the text said “Diversified business group Videocon is planning to set up a 1,000 MW hydro power project in Uttranchal with an investment of Rs. 6,000 crore.” We repeat the correction we issued on January 24, 2007, April 3, 2007 and February 12, 2008: Uttaranchal (and not Uttranchal, as published in this report) has been renamed as Uttarakhand.
The eighth paragraph in a cricket report “Clarke puts Aussies in control” (“Sport”, June 2, 2008) was “Clarke was still celebrating Marshall’s scalp, when Runako Morton heaved at another wellflighted ball and was caught at mid-wicket for a five-ball duck to leave West Indies on 105 for three…” while the scorecard gave it as “West Indies — 1st innings: … R. Morton c Katich b Clarke 2”. The scoreboard is right. Morton was out for two off five balls. (The report was on the second Test against West Indies.)
The tenth paragraph in a tennis report “Sharapova leads a Russian charge” (“Sport”, June 1, 2008) was “Two of the men’s third round ties went to five sets. Spanish fifth seed David Ferrer crushed the brave resistance of Australia’s Lleyton Hewitt 6-2, 3-6, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 in a marathon three- and-a-half hour tussle”, while the results gave it as “5-David Ferrer (Esp) bt 25-Lleyton Hewitt (Aus) 6-2, 3-6, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4”. The text is right. (The report was on the French Open.)
The first paragraph in a report “Three Indians make it to quarterfinals” (“Sport”, May 31, 2008) was “Three Indians, including National champion Chetan Anand, have cruised to the men’s singles quarterfinals of Toulouse Open badminton championship in Toulouse, France”. It should have been two men and one woman made it to the last eight.
The sixth paragraph in a report “Federer and Nadal stay on course” (“Sport”, May 30, 2008), was “Meanwhile, one of the men seen as being the main obstacles in the way of a third straight Nadal-Federer final, sixth seeded David Nalbandian of Argentina
lost 3-6, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1, 6-2 to French wildcard Nicolas Devilder ….” Nalbandian lost to Jeremy Chardy. The report was on the third round at Roland Garros.
The seventh paragraph in a cricket report “Australia will look to wrap up series” (“Sport”, May 30, 2008) was “‘But there was some good bowling in there. It was a situation where it was an unsettling sort of time to have to bat, only an hour left in the (fourth) day’s play, just trying to get through the session rather than playing your natural game ….’” It should have been third day’s play. (The report was on the second Test against West Indies.)
The last paragraph in a report “Marsh in majestic touch again” (“Sport”, May 29, 2008) was “Yuvraj finally ran into form with a 16-ball 49 and smashed three successive sixes of Siddharth Trivedi before being runout off the last ball of the innings in his bid to reach his maiden half-century in the competition”, while the scorecard gave Yuvraj’s score as 59. The text is right. (The report was on the last league match of the Indian Premier League at Mohali.)
