Veterinary varsity soon to launch videoconferencing

M.B. Girish

It will computerise libraries

GOING HI-TECH: A view of the Karnataka Veterinary, Animal and Fisheries Sciences University in Bidar.

BIDAR: The Karnataka Veterinary, Animal and Fisheries Sciences University, which has its headquarters in Bidar, will be going hi-tech soon. The university, which came into existence in 2004-05, will launch videoconferencing facility and computerisation and digitalisation of libraries on its Bidar and Bangalore campuses.

The university with grants from the Indian Council for Agricultural Research (ICAR) will launch its website besides taking up launching of videoconferencing and other development work, including online journal access facilities, at a cost of Rs. 3.15 crore.

The aim is to connect both students and farmers in remote places of the State to the university. While students can have access for academic and research purposes, farmers can establish contact to overcome their problems in farming and allied activities.

Videoconferencing will initially link Bidar and Hebbal campuses in Bangalore. Later, the facility will connect Mangalore and other centres of the university.

The university has veterinary colleges in Bangalore, Bidar, Hassan and Shimoga, according to Director of Extension of KVAFS H. Shivananda Murthy.

He told The Hindu here on Tuesday that videoconferencing would help conduct counselling for students for admission to undergraduate and postgraduate programmes offered by the university. Apart from Bidar, students can attend counselling sessions from Bangalore itself to get admission to various courses being offered.

Citing previous year’s experience, Mr. Murthy said: “Many students did not attend counselling sessions considering that Bidar was the remotest part of the State.” Therefore, the university thought of introducing videoconferencing to enable students to attend counselling sessions from Bangalore as well.”

The university has Livestock Research and Information Centres in Bidar (Deoni Farm), Kolenahalli in Tiptur of Tumkur district and Nagamangala in Mandya district. There are also the Fisheries Research and Information Centres at Hessarghatta in Bangalore and at Ankola in Uttara Kannada district and the videoconferencing facility would help in conducting farmers’ interactive sessions with experts and scientists. Extension activities in veterinary sciences, dairy farming and fisheries could also be conducted, he said.

The library with online access to international journals will help research scholars, teaching faculty and students.
