Poor catch, rue fishermen

K. Subramanian

NAGAPATTINAM: Fishermen of Nagapattinam district coast, who resumed venturing into the sea since Saturday after the expiry of the 45-day mandatory ban on fishing for mechanised boats and trawlers, expressed disappointment over poor catch this year.

A cross-section of fishermen told on Tuesday said that they expected huge quantity of fish on the 188-km long Nagapattinam coast but were disappointed. The sudden change in the behaviour of the sea coupled with unseasonal conditions might have affected breeding of fish in the sea.

The fishermen hope that they might get a good catch this week after the “Amavasai” on Tuesday. Small fiberglass boats and catamarans, however, get the catch as usual.

According to fishermen, they were not getting good price for the fish compared to the cost of fishing. Mechanised boats and trawlers are spending Rs.7,000 to Rs.8,000 on diesel for one trip.

Meanwhile, fishermen’s association has appealed to the State Government to give cash relief to the fishermen for the lean period.
