Thiruvananthapuram
Thiruvananthapuram: The rural police on Tuesday arrested a man wanted in connection with the murder of Jayakumar, 36, at the latter’s house at Kurakonam in Kattakada on May 1. Circle Inspector (Kattakada) A. Shanawaz identified the suspect as Ernakulam Biju. He is wanted in over 40 cases, including the murder and rape of a 11-year-old girl. The police arrested Biju from a hideout in Makki forest near Vithura. A 10-member armed gang had stormed Jayakumar’s house at 11 p.m. on the day. They hacked Jayakumar to death and grievously injured his brother and father. Mr. Shanawaz said Jayakumar was in love with the sister of Rajesh and Ramesh, the prime accused in the case. She committed suicide in 1999 when Jayakumar married another woman. The police booked Jayakumar on the charge abetting her death. The Circle Inspector said the brothers avenged their sister’s death nine years after the incident. They cobbled together a hit team of 10 persons, including wanted man Mambazhakkara Ani who they had met in a prison in Tamil Nadu. The police gathered evidence against them by analysing telephone call records. Secret police work for the past one month helped investigators arrest four of the assailants, the police said.
