CUTTACK: Jewellery shop owners of the famous jewellery market of Nayasarak here in the city downed their shutters on Tuesday in protest against what they call “police inaction to check the recent spurt in jewellery looting incidents. More than 100 shops and 50 jewellery workshops of the area observed a dawn to dusk bandh and organised a protest meeting in the locality to drive home their point. Tuesday’s protest was the immediate reaction to Monday’s looting of about 27 kg of silver ornaments from a filigree worker. Chandan Yadav of Maharashtra was eking out a living by working in a workshop here for last 10 years. On Monday evening Chandan was taking the silver ornaments in a bag to deliver them to the clients when three unidentified persons decamped with the ornament bag after throwing chilli powder in his eyes. The incident took place around 8 p.m. near Banka Bazaar when Chandan was carrying the consignment worth over Rs. 6 lakh in a bicycle, police said. Although, a case was filed with the local Lalbagh police station, no one was arrested in this connection even after 24 hours have passed, alleges a jeweller .
