BHUBANESWAR: After dillydallying on supply of information on withdrawal of petty criminal cases against suspected naxalites, Home Department finally informed State Information Commission (SIC) that a decision was taken not to press charges in 34 cases involving 417 persons related to naxal violence. A couple of weeks ago, responding to RTI application the same department said no case had been withdrawn against naxalites. Then it had also said naxalites those who wanted to return to mainstream could come through surrender scheme prepared by the State government. “Their cases will be considered on a different footing.” When a statement of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik released in 2004 was placed before SIC by City-based human rights activist and information seeker Biswapriya Kanungo, the Home Department had no other way, but to provide the information. The department said of the 417 persons 341 belonged to schedule tribe, 56 Scheduled Caste and 36 from general category. These people had been intimated by appropriate discipline of police department to the concerned authorities, the Home Department said.
