To come up on 5.5 acres of land Bamboo bio-shield, butterfly park planned THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Eco-Bio Wet Park being set up by the Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment (KSCSTE) near the Akkulam tourist village here will be a pilot project for lake-front development in the State. The park is to come up on 5.5 acres of land behind the new building of the National Transportation Planning and Research Centre (Natpac). The foundation stone for the five-storey Natpac building, being set up opposite the Centre for Earth Science Studies (CESS), will be laid by Chief Minister V. S. Achuthanandan on Wednesday. The relocating of the Natpac premises from Sastra Bhavan in Pattom to Akkulam is aimed at giving a fresh impetus to the organisation’s research activities. At the function, the blueprint of the proposed eco-bio park will be handed over to Tourism Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan. A butterfly park, a rock garden, a freshwater lake, a traffic park, islands, a geological and rock museum, an aqua garden, a bio-shield of bamboos and mangroves will be the attractions of the park. Research and development centres under the council — the CESS, the Centre for Water Resources Development and Management (CWRDM), the Kerala Forest Research Institute (KFRI), the Natpac and the Tropical Botanical Garden and Research Institute (TBGRI) will join hands to set up the facilities. Since the land falls under the coastal regulatory zone (CRZ) norms, extra care is being taken in the implementation of the project, sources said. An effluent treatment plant will be set up by CWDRM. The butterfly park, being set up by KFRI, is to come up on two acres of land. Sources in the council said the details of the project were being worked out.
