Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment (KSCSTE) has taken up a State-wide project to train Anganwadi teachers in imparting sanitation and hygiene education to schoolchildren. The project, titled WASH (water, sanitation and hygiene), is part of a national campaign funded by the Department of Science and Technology. The year 2008 being the campaign year for sanitation, WASH aims at the improvement of water, sanitation and hygiene conditions for all. In Kerala, the campaign will be supported by the departments of Health and Social Welfare. As many as 100 Anganwadi teachers from each district will be trained in the first phase of the participatory project to be implemented through district coordinators of the National Green Corps. The awareness programme is to be based on scientific inputs on the best practices with respect to sanitation, hygiene and drinking water. “The campaign will follow a grassroots-level approach. By involving teachers, we hope to reach out to children and parents alike. Children who are trained in better hygiene and sanitation can easily influence the hygiene behaviour of their families,” says E.P. Yesodharan, Executive Vice-President, KSCSTE. Waste management, conservation of water bodies and protection of the environment will form the thrust areas of the campaign in the subsequent stages. Scientists, social workers, policy makers and people’s representatives will be involved in the programme. “The thrust of the campaign will be on community-based interventions involving all stakeholders to ensure sustainable water quality, especially in rural areas,” says Kamalakshan Kokkal, Principal Scientific Officer, KSCSTE. Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan is scheduled to launch the networking for WASH at a function here on Thursday.
