Inconvenience: Vehicles struggle to pass through Dharapuram Road in Tirupur as the construction of elevated bridge is yet to be over.

TIRUPUR: With the traffic being closed for heavy vehicles on the busy Dharapuram Road here for nearly nine months, the sufferings of the road users continue as the construction of bridge is yet to be completed.

Additional travel

All the buses and lorries have been diverted on an another road, which requires additional travel of 2 km, on the busy highway that houses the District Headquarters Government Hospital. The alternative road formed adjacent to the bridge was not well-laid.

An elevated, widened bridge is coming up across the Sangilipallam Stream at a cost of more than Rs.1 crore.

Motorists recall the assurance the authorities gave when the road was closed for traffic in October that the bridge work would be completed in six months considering the high volume of traffic on the arterial road.

With the beginning of monsoon the residents doubt whether the work will be completed within the time.

Officials point out that there was a delay initially in removing electric poles, water pipes and telephone cables due to lack of coordination among departments.

The containers carrying garments to Tuticorin Port need to travel on the alternative route which adds up traffic on the narrow stretch.

Amid the growing discontent among the residents over the progress of work, the authorities say that the work will be completed in mid July. The ready-mix concrete will be used in two phases and in all probabilities the work will be over by July 15, an official says
