TAMBARAM: As part of an initiative to provide total green cover at the Training Institute of Metropolitan Transport Corporation in Chromepet, 43 saplings of shade-giving trees were planted on the institute’s premises on Monday.

Senior officials of the MTC and volunteers from Exnora International planted different varieties of saplings that included ‘pungan,’ ‘peltaforum,’ ‘gulmohar’ and ‘magizham.’

The objective was to plant no less than 100 saplings in the training institute, which is sprawled over 10 acres.

Exnora Founder M. B. Nirmal said there was nothing like planting saplings on roadsides, but tree guards were becoming expensive, at no less than Rs.650 each. And hence, they had approached educational institutions to plant as many saplings as possible.

“Many respond, while some others are reluctant,” Mr. Nirmal said, pointing out that a self-financing technical institution located off Rajiv Gandhi Salai (formerly Old Mahabalipuram Road) near Sholinganallur refused to plant saplings.

The college authorities, Mr. Nirmal said, feared that once the saplings grew up, girls and boys studying in the college would take refuge under them.

M.Ramasubramanian, Managing Director, Metropolitan Transport Corporation, and other officials and volunteers from Exnora were present on the occasion.
