Youth killed as bus hits motorcycle

Special Correspondent

TAMBARAM: A 21-year-old youth was killed and his friend injured when the motorcycle which they were riding was hit by a Sate government bus at Pallavaram on Grand Southern Trunk Road on Monday.

On way to varsity

S. Aravind and Sharadha were residents of Chromepet and completed their engineering degree in Madras Institute of Technology. They were on their way to Anna University to get their certificates when the accident took place.

Sharadha of Bharathi Nagar was seated on the pillion of the motorcycle, which was driven by Aravind, a resident of Ramachandra Road in Nehru Nagar. When they were negotiating a right curve on GST Road near Areva signal point, the two-wheeler was hit by the bus belonging to Villupuram Division.

While Sharadha was thrown off the motorcycle and fell on the road side, Aravind, in the impact of the accident, was drawn under the chassis of the bus. He was hit by the axle of the vehicle and died on the spot, police said. The accident shocked passers-by and shop-owners at the spot.

Sharadha was rushed to the Tambaram Taluk Government Hospital (Chromepet GH) and later referred to a private hospital, where she is undergoing treatment.

A pall of gloom descended on Ramachandra Road, Nehru Nagar, outside Aravind’s house as friends, neighbours and relatives came in large numbers. Aravind was preparing to leave for Bangalore, where he had got a job, a resident said.

Accident-prone

Residents of Pallavaram said the stretch around the Areva signal had become accident-prone. Uncleared layers of silt on road margins had shrunk space on the carriageway. And throughout the day, two-wheelers, autorickshaws and even cars would drive on the wrong side of GST Road from the Areva signal point to reach Shandy Road, posing problems to law-abiding motorists, they said.

The Tambaram Traffic Police are investigating.
