Grant Rs. 5 lakh to family of fisherman: Jayalalithaa
Special Correspondent
CHENNAI: AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa on Tuesday urged Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi to release a minimum of Rs. 5 lakh solatium to the family of Rameswaram fisherman M. Santhiyahu, who was allegedly killed in a firing by the Sri Lankan Navy.
In a statement, Ms. Jayalalithaa said Rs. 1 lakh was distributed to families of fishermen during her regime and it was not adequate considering the rate of inflation and the price rise now.
She alleged that the fishermen were living in fear because of the attacks and firings by the Sri Lankan Navy.
“In March Christi, a fisherman was killed in the firing. About 45 fishermen were arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy some time ago,” she said.
