KASARAGOD: The Union government has given primary-level clearance to a Rs.150-crore comprehensive project submitted by the Kerala State Agency for the Expansion of Cashew Cultivation (KSACC) for the development of cashew cultivation in the State. At a press conference here on Wednesday, special officer of the KSACC G. Mohan Das, member J. Mercykutty Amma and head of the Department of Agronomy of Kerala Agricultural University (KAU) M. Abdul Salam, who provides expert advice to the KSACC, said the Union government was expected to formally announce the approval soon. Mr. Das said the project, named ‘Organic Cashew Cultivation Scheme’ envisaged aid to farmers to plant high-yielding varieties of cashew on their land. An aid of Rs.85 per sapling would be paid to the farmer in the initial year as per the project. A total of Rs.200 would be given as aid per plant in a phased manner. The farmer could get aid for replanting existing cashew plantations or starting new plantations. The KAU would provide technical advice to farmers. Ms. Mercykutty Amma said the project would be implemented under the supervision of the district panchayats and cooperation of the grama panchayats. Kasaragod district panchayat president M.V. Balakrishnan Master said 21 panchayats in the district had expressed their interest in the project.
