MADURAI: Steps should be taken to get patent right and Geographical Indication for Madurai Malli, Collector S. S. Jawahar said on Wednesday. Inaugurating a workshop at Thiagarajar College here, he said the flower was grown on 900 hectares in the Tirupparankundram, Chellampatti, Usilampatti and Tirumangalam blocks. This year, the district administration planned to increase this to 1,025 hectares. Drip irrigation
Mr. Jawahar promised steps to encourage farmers to nurture beehives that would help them earn more. On two-and-half hectares, a farmer could install 10 hives, each costing Rs.16,000. The government would extend a 90 per cent subsidy. The administration was popularising drip irrigation and micro-irrigation for jasmine cultivation. The Madurai chapter of the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage organised the workshop, along with Madurai Vattara Kalanjiam, Livelihood Initiatives with Functional Education of the Dhan Foundation and Thiagarajar College, to help flower vendors improve their earnings. Twelve resource persons from Madurai and Coimbatore conducted the training for 180 retail flower sellers. The workshop dealt with flower jewellery, flower for hotel decoration, flower archways, canopies, garlands and ‘Madurai Urruttu Kattu.’ Participants sought more training in their areas.
