Segregated collection of waste picking up

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: Segregated collection of bio-degradable waste has picked up even as the indecision on non-degradable waste continues in the city.

On Tuesday, 107-tonnes of biodegradable waste was sent to the Brahmapuram plant for treatment. Barring a few hotels and residents associations that segregates waste at the points of origin, mixed waste is still reaching the city roads.

The Corporation has been employing its team for the collection and manual segregation of waste, said Mini Antony, secretary of the Kochi Corporation.

During the initial days, the quantity of segregated waste that was despatched for treatment was around 34 tonnes. However, this has increased steadily, she said.

On the complaint that the civic authorities have removed the waste dumping bins from the streets, Ms. Antony said that such steps were taken for improving the segregated collection of waste.

On the issue of the disposal of the non-degradable waste, the Steering Committee of the Corporation has decided to stock them at the divisions and public places which are available for the stocking. As the non-degradable waste does not cause any environment or health issues, the civic authorities have decided to regionally stock them till a decision is taken.

UDF criticism

The failure of the Kochi Corporation to complete the formalities before the implementation of the bylaws has resulted in the present garbage crisis, said A.B. Sabu, UDF leader of the Kochi Corporation, in a statement issued on Tuesday.

The Corporation, which removed the waste collection bins from the streets, failed to provide alternative measures for the collection of waste.

The services of the Kudumbasree units that are collecting waste from the households have not reached all parts of the city leading to a crisis in the removal of garbage, he said.
