Kerala plans cargo ship to the Maldives
Ignatius Pereira
KOLLAM: In contrast to earlier plans, the first cargo ship to call at the Kollam port (commissioned last October) will not be one that brings cargo to Kollam but one that will carry cargo from Kollam to the Maldives.
This is likely to materialise in mid-June when the monsoon trawling ban comes into force.
At present, about five ships sail a week for the Maldives with cargo from the Vizhinjam port in Thiruvananthapuram.
Sources in the Kerala Ports Department told The Hindu that measures were being taken to operate one of these ships from Kollam on an experimental basis during the trawling ban period.
