dated June 5, 1958: India loses title

“If the better team won, congratulations to it,” said Prime Minister Nehru, commenting on Pakistan’s winning the gold medal from India in the hockey event in the Tokyo Asian Games. This was the first time that Mr. Nehru was asked to comment on the subject of sports in his press conference in New Delhi on June 4, and he gave expression to what he thought of the way in which sports and games was being conducted in the country. He said, “What is there if the better team won? We should like India to win. But our athletes and hockey have suffered a great deal from internal squabbles and sometimes even the best team is not picked because of petty jealousies.”
