dated June 5, 1958: Tamil refugees in Colombo

Six ships, carrying 4,500 Tamil refugees to their homeland in Northern Jaffna Peninsula, left Colombo on June 3, in one of the biggest operations involving movement of population ever undertaken by the Ceylon government. The refugees represent about half the number of Tamil people housed in camps in Colombo for the last one week, following the recent disturbances which upset Sinhalese-Tamil relations throughout the island.
