SC, ST panel for action against erring police

‘Narayankhed mandal worst in atrocities against SCs, STs’

‘Two-tumbler system’ still prevalent in the mandal: panel chief


SANGAREDDY: Taking strong exception to the Medak district police’s inaction against the culprits under the SC ST Atrocities (Prevention) Act, SC and ST Commission Chairman Nagarjuna warned them that he would recommend severe action on them for failing to protect the interests of the weaker sections.

Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday Nagarjuna who is on a day’s visit to the district said that the DSPs concerned in the cases of two SC girls Bhagyalaxmi of Annaram of Jinnaram mandal and Pushpalatha of Katriala of Ramayampet mandal have failed to initiate action within the stipulated thirty days time after registering a case under the Act.

The Chairman summoned the DSP of Toopran and asked him to book the culprit who exploited an SC girl and married another despite the assurances given buy the police and the administration.

Untouchability

Calling Narayankhed mandal as the worst of all, in relation to atrocities on SC and STs , Nagarjuna said that symbols of oppression like untouchability, two tumbler system were still prevalent in that mandal. He assured the social service organizations that he would camp in that mandal for ten days and tackle these social evils there itself.

However he warned the SC and ST organizations not to misuse the Act for personal vendetta. Replying to a question on the attack on Andhra Jyothi office by the MRPS activists and the complaint made by the MRPS on the newspaper management under the Atrocities Act, Nagarjuna said that the Commission was waiting the report from the Police commissioner’s office and only after that could make a comment on the issue. He pointed out that the Commission denounces violence but was also concerned about the violence meted out on weaker sections in the State.

Earlier, he visited Posanpalli of Pulkal mandal and unveiled a statue of B.R.Ambedkar. G.Shankar, secretary general of AP SC welfare association and M.Premkumar of AP branch of All India confederation of SC and ST organizations, and B.Nagesh of Medak SC and ST welfare association accompanied the chairman.
