CPI protests petrol price increase

MADURAI: Cadres of the Communist Party of India blocked road at four places in the district protesting against the proposed increase in price of petroleum products on Wednesday.

The police took into custody 29 cadres, when they tried to disrupt vehicular traffic at Melur, Tirumangalam, Sholavandan and Tirupparankundram.

Demonstration

Members of the Government Transport Madurai Employees’ Association staged a demonstration in front of the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation office demanding to issue appointment orders for reserve crew who have worked for 240 days in Madurai region here on Wednesday.

Over 500 employees recruited through employment exchanges from Virudhunagar and Dindigul who worked as drivers and conductors in Madurai zone had not been given orders for having put in 240 days of service. “Only if their 240 days of work is recognised their service could be regularised,” R. Sivanandi, the association secretary said.

Trade union leaders, K.V. Gurusamy, B. Vikraman, V. Pitchai, were among those who participated in the demonstration.

Woman cheated

A woman was relieved of six sovereign of gold ornaments by another woman who came home to perform prayers. According to police sources, the incident took place on February 26 and the victim, J. Kathija Beevi (45) of Goripalayam, lodged the complaint late. The accused came to her house on the pretext of performing some prayer to alleviate poverty in the family.

During the prayer, she asked Kathija to remove her jewels and keep them in a box under the instructions that it should be opened the next day. When the complainant opened the box, the jewels were found missing.
